Many cultures associate penis size with masculinity. Throughout the ages, it has come to symbolize qualities such as virility, fertility, strength, ability, sexual performance and courage. Many men worry that their penis is too small, but most men’s penises are a normal size. It’s important to remember that penis size doesn’t affect sexual performance, and that no matter how small you think your penis is, it’s likely to be normal.
So, what is the normal size?
There are no average length figures for teenagers because people grow at different rates. According to a study of more than 15,000 men, the average dimensions for an adult penis are:
- length: 13.12cm (5.16 inches) when erect
- circumference: 11.66cm (4.59 inches) when erect
There is large variation in the angle of an erect penis. Some erect penises point straight up, others straight down. Some have a slight bend to the left or right. There is no right shape. If you have a more significant bend in your penis that may cause you pain or difficulty having sex, see your GP.
There are a lot of methods to penis enlargement. Almost none of it works. The few approaches that can work often have modest benefits and serious side effects.
(1) Pills and lotions
These products usually contain vitamins, minerals, herbs or hormones that claim to enlarge the penis. Despite their impressive claims, there’s absolutely no clinical evidence that these products work and some may even be harmful.
(2) Vacuum devices
Penis pumps involve placing a tube over the penis and then pumping out the air to create a vacuum. The vacuum draws blood into the penis and makes it swell. Vacuum devices are sometimes used in the short-term treatment of impotence. But overusing a penis pump can damage the tissue of the penis, leading to weaker erections.
Some surgical techniques to increase penis girth involve injecting fat taken from another part of the body into the penis. Some studies have reported increases in circumference of 1.4-4cm. However, studies that followed men up over a longer time suggest disappointing results, with complications including disfigurement, scarring, lumpiness and infection.
“Size really doesn’t matter nearly as much as being a good and creative lover,”
While you can’t do much to safely enlarge your penis, men can do several things to make them feel more confident about their body.
- trim your pubic hair – a big mound of pubic hair can make your penis look smaller than it is
- lose weight – a beer belly hanging over your penis can make your penis look smaller
- get fit – getting into shape will not only make you feel more attractive, it could improve your sex life
If you’re still worried – counselling has proven to be beneficial for men with penis anxiety. Therapy helps patients identify and correct any distorted views about their penis, build self-confidence and overcome fears about sexual relationships
